DVA helps with transport to treatment your Veteran Card covers. Depending on your age and health, DVA may book and pay for a taxi or hire car to your appointment. Otherwise you can claim back reasonable travel costs, such as private car use, parking, tolls and public transport.
DVA transport booking with the Booked Car with Driver service
Through the Booked Car with Driver (BCWD) service, DVA arranges a taxi or hire car to and from your appointment at no cost to you. It's for Gold and White Card holders who meet the access criteria:
- Gold Card holders who are 80 or over, legally blind, living with dementia, or receiving TPI, the EDA, the ADA or eligible for the SRDP, can use it for all treatment their card covers.
- White Card holders who are 80 or over, legally blind or living with dementia can use it for treatment of their accepted conditions or non-liability health care.
- Gold Card holders aged 79 or under, and White Card holders travelling for covered treatment, can use it if they have a condition that makes public transport difficult, severely limits their independence, or follows recent surgery or treatment.
Book online in MyService, which DVA prefers for trips more than 48 hours ahead, or call 1800 550 455. A family member, friend, health provider or representative can book for you. For a return trip, the driver gives you a Right of Return card so you can arrange the trip home directly.

DVA travel claims
If you can't use BCWD, you may be able to claim back taxi, rideshare, community transport and public transport fares, and other reasonable travel costs, including private vehicle use, parking, tolls, meals and accommodation. Claim in MyService or with form D0800, Claim for Travelling Expenses, and attach your receipts.
Travel entitlements are based on where you are at the time of treatment, and DVA may not pay the full cost if you keep travelling to old providers after moving house.
Ambulance transport
In an emergency, call triple zero (000). DVA may pay for an ambulance when it's medically required for a condition your card covers, and for non-emergency ambulance transport your medical provider arranges.
What DVA travel doesn't cover
Travel entitlements don't extend to Administrative Review Tribunal hearings, treatment outside Australia, or your usual rehabilitation activities. DVA may pay travel for a medical examination it asks you to attend, or to get evidence for or attend a Veterans' Review Board hearing.
