DVA pays compensation for hearing loss the same way as other conditions: through permanent impairment points. The difference is the threshold. You need only 5 impairment points for hearing loss, compared with 10 for most conditions, and from 1 July 2026 DVA accepts sensorineural hearing loss as service-related after any defence service.
DVA hearing loss payout
Two veterans with the same diagnosis can receive very different amounts. DVA combines the impairment from all your accepted conditions into a rating from 0 to 100 points, adds a lifestyle rating from 0 to 7, and applies the compensation factor for your type of service. Earlier compensation is taken into account, and a lump sum also depends on your age. Someone else's hearing loss payout doesn't predict yours.
Hearing loss and tinnitus are separate conditions. If both are accepted, DVA combines their impairment with any other accepted conditions.
Impairment points for hearing loss
Your hearing is tested, and DVA's claims assessor uses the results and GARP M to work out your impairment points, then adds your lifestyle rating. Hearing loss qualifies for compensation at 5 impairment points or more. The same lower threshold applies to loss of fingers or toes and loss of taste or smell.

Claiming hearing loss
Under presumptive liability, sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus are both accepted as service-related after any defence service, unless there's clear evidence of another cause. You still need a diagnosis, and you lodge the claim in MyService.
